Welcome to the home of the White River Toxic Action Committee

W R T A C

Here you will find all types of information regarding one of the more negligent, if not criminal, acts committed against a neighborhood at the junction of the White and Connecticut rivers.
Through the 1970s and 80s,
Parkway Cleaners ran a dry cleaning business on Hazen St.  Unfortunately, this company left behind a legacy of toxic chemicals that they had dumped on their site.  The chemicals have since seeped down into the soil, and almost certainly into the groundwater under our community, including both the White and Connecticut Rivers.  The toxic chemicals, namely PERC, are now rising into our homes, polluting our air and threatening our health. While work has started on some homes, the site perimiter has never been positively established. More alarming is that no testing has been done to determine the volume, or rate of flow of chemicals into the White and Connecticut Rivers, and what effect that may have on Fishing and Recreational usage.

This site will be expanding to contain documentation of contamination, local, state, and national contamination links and other related resources and articles.
UPDATE

To our current knowledge the remediation work scheduled to be completed in late spring of 2008 is STILL NOT 100% complete and no air testing has been done to verify current day results.

It is now approaching another winter and it is time to start closing up the homes and for ANOTHER YEAR we still do not know who's house has been rendered safe and who is still at risk for exposure to PCE  again this winter.

I feel that we, as well as the media, have been far far to gracious towards all those involved giving what has obviously become a "free pass". In this election year it is time to demand accountability.
This site will be made fully current and available to the media on monday october 6th 2008
